The Friends Who Made a Way Faith, friendship, and the man lowered through the roof 📖 Mark 2:1–12 Some days, we need someone to help us take the next step—to pray with us, show up at our door, or carry a burden we cannot manage alone. In Mark 2, four friends brought a paralyzed man to Jesus. When they reached the house where Jesus was teaching, the crowd blocked their way. There was no room, even at the door. They had carried their friend this far. Now they faced an obstacle. But they stayed. They went to the roof, opened it above Jesus, and lowered their friend on his mat. Imagine the care that required: four people working together, holding the ropes, making sure their friend reached the ground safely. Their faith became visible through their actions. They could not heal him, but they could bring him to Jesus. Seeing their faith, Jesus told the man that his sins were forgiven. Some religious teachers silently questioned His authority. Jesus then healed the man to demonstrate that the Son of Man had authority on earth to forgive sins. The man stood, picked up his mat, and walked out in front of everyone. The people were amazed and praised God. This story reveals Jesus’ authority to forgive and heal. It also gives us a beautiful picture of friendship: people who notice a need and choose to help. We can live that kind of friendship through ordinary acts of love. A meal delivered. A ride offered. A prayer spoken over the phone. A faithful visit during a lonely season. We cannot control another person’s circumstances, but we can help them feel supported as we bring their needs before Jesus. And when we are the ones who need help, we can receive it. The man in this story reached Jesus while others held the ropes. Accepting care can be an act of trust, too. Whose burden can you help carry today—and where might you need to let someone help you? Prayer Lord Jesus, thank You for Your mercy and authority to forgive. Give me eyes to notice people who need support and a willing heart to show up for them. When I need help, give me the humility to receive it. Teach us to carry one another’s burdens in love and bring our needs to You. Amen.
